How do I light my house in the winter? Make your home cosier

As winter approaches, natural light is scarce, and our homes risk becoming cold, uninviting places. But with a few tricks, we can turn our rooms into oases of warmth and comfort. Here's how to make the most of lighting to create a cosy atmosphere until spring arrives.

Optimises natural light

Natural light is a panacea for our well-being and in winter, more than ever, it becomes precious. In general, position furniture so as to make the most of the sun's rays and use light curtains to let the light filter in diffusely.

On bright days, a strategically placed lamp may suffice to give the right light to a room. For grey and cloudy days, on the other hand, opt for a warm, soft light, split across several spots. Use floor lamps, portable decorative lamps and abat-jours to counteract the darkness and make the room more comfortable.

Solutions for rooms with less light

For rooms such as the bathroom or corridor, which are usually already dimly lit, consider wall lights and lamps. In the bathroom, a lamp next to the mirror can provide the right visibility without sacrificing comfort. In the bedroom, bedside abat-jours provide soft, cosy winter lighting. In the kitchen, use linear S14D bulbs to add light where it is needed most.

Increases lighting points

Don't be afraid to add more lamps in each room. The more light points you have, the more options you have. You can decide to light just one lamp or more than one, depending on the atmosphere you want to create. This allows you to customise the lighting according to the occasion, making each space unique and cosy.

The ideal bulbs for the winter months

Not all bulbs are the right lights for winter. Choose those with a warm colour temperature (2000-3000 K) for an enveloping light. And if you have doubts about how to recognise a warm light, click here.

Also consider changing lamp shades to optimise the quality of light, opting for materials that diffuse a warm and welcoming glow.

Extra tips and ideas

    • Use dimmers to adjust the light intensity according to your needs and create different atmospheres.

    • Scented candles are a winter classic. Light them to add little points of light while scenting the room with your favourite essences. The warm, spicy scents evoke feelings of comfort and well-being.

    • The colours of light influence our mood. Red stimulates, blue relaxes. Experiment with coloured lights to create different moods according to your needs.

    • From edelweiss to azaleas. Green plants bring a touch of nature into the home and help purify the air.

    • Use warm and cosy fabrics such as wool, cashmere and velvet to create a cosy atmosphere.
